with Lisa Clifton-Bumpass of A Step Beyond San Leandro, Sunday, June 22, 9am to 1pm, $75 This seminar has been cancelled. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Finally a course designed for shelter and rescue workers that address the unique issues for small organizations. This 4- hour lecture introduces you to the professional issues that encompass documenting behavior issues such as aggression, separation anxiety and fear. We will discuss how to design an evaluation that serves the needs of your organization, how assessments set the animal up to fail or pass, assessors bias, dogs who learn from the tests and safety issues to consider. We will also examine the ethical issues facing organizations rehoming dogs with problem behavior events in their histories, when dealing with the public what information adoption service representatives need to provide to potential new owners. Thoughtful, well informed, accurate and up to date information in order to protect the dog, the owner, the community and your organization. During the lecture we will examine normal aggression development, agonistic responses, health issues that are reported to impact aggression prone individuals, how dogs learn from temperament assessments and the biology of aggression. We will also look at the common best practices based on the natural biology of the dog, which are the most informative books, websites and how to interview and select professional help as well as client compliance. ~Examine the current science behind temperament tests ~Who on your staff should be doing the assessments ~What are the minimum standards for your organization ~Is learning occurring when an assessment is going on ~Staff conflict resolution methods ~Developing a full release of information policy and the ethical considerations of adoption ~What should be tested for ~Are the assessments a guarantee ~how to design and maintain your records ~Do you know enough about behavior? Lisa’s temperament assessment class has been the education source of choice for many shelters and humane society organizations in the Bay Area.
